Eugene eyeing Roar’s scalp to secure top three spot

Adelaide United’s captain, Eugene Galekovic, has highlighted the importance of Saturday’s win against Western Sydney Wanderers, but all eyes are now on Brisbane Roar as the team tries to cement a spot in the top three with another win against last season’s champions.

“I think it was important to get a win (against Western Sydney) after the Melbourne Victory game,” Galekovic said.

“It gives us that confidence going into the (match against) Brisbane. Obviously (it) will be another important one for us as we try to maintain that top two, or top three position in the league.”

Although Brisbane’s form this season has surprised a lot of people, Galekovic said he and his teammates are preparing for a difficult clash at Coopers Stadium on Friday night, but worrying about how the Roar will play won’t help United much at all.

“They (Brisbane) have been a bit up and down, but I thought that against Western Sydney a couple of weeks ago they were very good and then on the weekend (against Melbourne City) they might not have played their best football.

“We don’t really know what to expect, or how they’re going to come out, but if we just worry about ourselves and play good football, we’ll give ourselves a really good chance to get three points.

Galekovic continued by reflecting on the season so far and the way the Reds have been performing and believes even though he may have had a lot less to do this season in terms of saves, for example, the most pivotal aspect of the squad is good performances and even better results.

“It’s been a little bit different to a lot of (other seasons) and mainly a lot quieter especially in terms of making saves. In terms of playing out, I’ve definitely got a lot more balls at my feet and I’m getting a lot more passes,” he explained.

“It’s a good thing, though, and it’s the way we play. We try and win the ball in our half and try to get it back as quickly as possible and in a lot of cases that’s happening. If anything my work’s different in terms of sweeping behind the centre-backs.

“When you’re winning, I think everything’s good. It’s a good brand of football to play and the players love it because we have a lot of possession, meaning we don’t have to defend a lot without the ball.”
