Eugene Galekovic has rejoined training with Adelaide United after being a part of the Socceroos squad in Brazil.
Our captain was able to spend some time away from the game after the squad failed to qualify from the group by soaking up the electricity around the host country.
“It was good to enjoy the atmosphere away from the pitch – Brazil games were different to every other game of course but it was just great to witness it from the other side.
“Honestly though, after a few weeks I was just eager to get back into training as soon as possible and start preparing for the season and the Asian Cup in January.
“I hate missing out on things.”
And Eugene was amazed by all of the young talent and faces that were included in the 23-man squad that travelled to Brazil.
“It was a lot different to previous tournaments. There were lots of young faces and we had a new coach so it was always going to take a bit of time to gel.
“But there was a great atmosphere around the camp and I credit the boys for giving it everything they had throughout the tournament and we-re only going to get better.”
When asked about the 2014/15 season, Eugene responded with an eagerness to improve on last year from the start.
“We-ve got a few new boys in and more coming through the youth setup and the foreigners usually have a great second year after they-ve settled in.
“They were good last year but we need an improvement from everyone.”
As for the game against Málaga later this month at Adelaide Oval, Eugene expressed his desire for the fans to come out in numbers.
“It-s great to have this international friendly in Adelaide, as the last one was New Zealand against the Socceroos and we have a new stadium now.
“It will be great to see how our possession-based style of football is going to match up against a strong La Liga side in Málaga.”
The match promises to be a strong test for the Reds in the lead up to the new season and Eugene and the squad will be looking to continue their preparation in the best way possible.
