Adelaide United captain, Eugene Galekovic, has returned to training with his teammates, after arriving back in Adelaide following his involvement in the Socceroos Asian Cup campaign.
Galekovic was part of the 23-man Socceroos squad that won the Asian Cup last week, but upon his return to Adelaide, our No. 1 has said he’s happy to be back and ready to focus on the remainder of the season with his teammates.
“It was unreal,” Galekovic said.
“As a country, I don’t think we’ve won a big tournament like that before and to be a part of that history is something I’ll cherish for a long time.
“Every time you go into the Socceroos camp you learn a lot because of the quality of players that are there and the intensity is a lot higher. You always come back (to club football) a better player, so hopefully I’ll bring that back to United.
“It’s been a good few months for myself, but hopefully we can clinch the A-League Championship that we’ve been waiting for for so long. If we do that, this (season) would be an unbelievable experience and would certainly top it all off.”
Analysing the Reds’ next match against Central Coast Mariners on February 7, Galekovic said he and his teammates are anticipating a tough match, but one that will test the club’s momentum and resolve following the 7-0 victory over Newcastle Jets last round.
“I’m back here (with United) now and I’ve missed the team and I’ve missed playing. That’s what I want to do, I want to play.
“Last week (against Newcastle) was a great result and the boys have been fantastic. Both young goalkeepers (Izzo and Hall) got some game time too, so it was definitely a great result.
“But there’s still a long way to go and we need to build the momentum again. The 7-0 result was good but we need to keep it going and get a few more good results on the board.
“Our focus is obviously on Central Coast and it’s going to be a hard game up there. But if we win that, we’ll give ourselves a great chance (for the rest of the season).”
Adelaide United will play Central Coast Mariners in Round 16 of the Hyundai A-league 2014/15 season on Saturday, 7 February at Central Coast Stadium. Kick off at 4.30pm ACDT.
