Galekovic called up to Socceroos’ World Cup Qualifiers

Adelaide United captain, Eugene Galekovic, has been called-up to be part of the Socceroos’ World Cup Qualifiers after injury has ruled out Mat Ryan.

Ryan, who has been ruled out of the Socceroos’ squad for the upcoming World Cup Qualifiers after succumbing to injury playing for Valencia against Deportivo de La Coruña, will be replaced by United’s captain, Eugene Galekovic, in the squad.

Socceroos’ head-coach, Ange Postecoglou, spoke of his disappointment to be losing Ryan for the crucial matches, but praised Galekovic as being the perfect replacement.

“It’s a blow for Matt to miss these games but he picked up a knock in Spain overnight and with the travel distance and the lateness of his club game we have decided to bring in Eugene Galekovic,” Postecoglou said.

“Eugene is a more than capable replacement and he will join us in Perth and we will move ahead without Mat.”

Speaking to adelaideunited.com.au, Galekovic told of his honour in being given the chance to represent Australia again and said it will give him a great opportunity to prepare ahead of the Hyundai A-League 2015/16 season.

“It’s an honour every time you get called up to the national squad.

“You have to grab it with both hands and try and make the most of it and I’ll do my best to help the squad in the upcoming qualifiers.

“The standard is high (in the camp) and every time you go you become a better player.

“When you’re there you take a lot from being around the group and it’ll definitely prepare me well for the upcoming A-League season.”

Should Galekovic feature in the match, it will be the ninth time he has represented the Socceroos across all games.
