Adelaide United FC goalkeeper Eugene Galekovic will again lead the Reds out after he was named the club-s captain for the Hyundai A-League 2013/14 Season by Coach Josep Gombau.

On deciding who would wear the captain-s armband for Season 9, Gombau revealed he left it to the players to vote on who they wanted, Galekovic a unanimous choice and one Gombau was more than happy to endorse.

“He (Galekovic) was the captain last season. I think he is one of the most important players in the team for his experience and for his knowledge, and for the style of person that he is,” Gombau said.

“When I arrived at the club what I wanted was that the players can choose and with everybody we arrived to an agreement on who they wanted to represent the players on and off the field, and he was the player.”

“He has the confidence of everybody and this is the best, that the players can choose who they want to represent the team.”

“After two and a half months here, my feeling is that he is a person that is involved with everybody, he is a person that helps everybody and that takes care of the young players at the club.”

It will be the third season Galekovic will captain the club after he took on the role midway through the Reds- 2011/12 campaign.

A dual Adelaide United Club Champion and Hyundai A-League Goalkeeper of the Year, the 32 year old has arguably excelled in the role, both through his vocal on field leadership and his performances between the posts.

“It-s an honour to be captain of the club again…especially coming from the players, it-s good pressure, they see you as the captain and you have to perform week in week out so I-m looking forward to it,” Galekovic said.

While privileged to be held in high regard by both his coach and his peers, Galekovic was quick to highlight the calibre of team mates that are as much part of the squad-s leadership and direction as he is.

“We-ve got a lot of experienced boys that do that role,” Galekovic said of leadership.

“In the end the captain is just the one that has got the armband and flips the coin at the start, but we-ve got a lot of guys like Cassio, Nigel Boogaard, Jonny McKain, Marcelo Carrusca that are leaders of our team.”
