Galekovic disappointed by flat Reds performance

Adelaide United Captain, Eugene Galekovic, believes his side lacked the aggression to trouble Melbourne City in Friday night’s 1-0 defeat at Coopers Stadium.

Despite almost snatching a late draw through Bruce Djite, the Reds rarely threatened in Galekovic’s 250th match for the club, as their 14-game unbeaten streak was ended by Nick Fitzgerald’s 71st minute goal.

“I don’t think we put enough pressure on them,” Galekovic told Fox Sports after the match.

“At 0-0 we didn’t really create too many chances and I don’t think Sorensen had to make a save.

“On our ground I think we have to take it to them and we didn’t do it today.”

Tarek Elrich’s absence with a groin injury affected Adelaide at both ends as Jordan Elsey was shifted to left-fullback following a string of fine performances in the heart of defence.

The 22-year-old was unable to replicate Elrich’s attacking intent and saw his opposite number in Fitzgerald end United’s run of three straight clean sheets.

Despite the setback, Galekovic backed Elsey’s ability to perform out of position.

“Jordan is a centre-back or even a right-back but at left-back he had to do a job for us today. I think he did it,” the veteran said.

“He’s a young lad, he’s still learning and the more positions he plays the more valuable he’s going to be. I think he did well tonight.”
