Adelaide United is delighted to announce the return of Reds legend, Eugene Galekovic, as the Club’s new Goalkeeping Coach for the next three Hyundai A-League seasons.

Galekovic spent 10 seasons with Adelaide between 2007 and 2017, establishing himself as one of the competition’s best-ever goalkeepers, and ending as the Club’s all-time appearances leader with 281. He recently announced his retirement from football after playing the final two years of his career with Melbourne City FC.

The 37-year-old enjoyed an illustrious career – spanning 20 years – with the majority of it spent at the Reds and littered with personal and team success.

Galekovic won the inaugural FFA Cup in 2014 before being a key component in the Reds’ unprecedented Premiers’ Plate and Championship double in 2016.

A two-time Aurelio Vidmar Club Champion, his consistency and superb shot-stopping ability saw him named the Hyundai A-League Goalkeeper of the Year a record four times, while earning eight Socceroos caps.

Galekovic, who also served as Reds Captain from 2011 to 2017, said he was looking forward to working with United’s current crop of custodians: Paul Izzo, Daniel Marguš, and Isaac Richards.

“This is a very exciting time for my family and I,” Galekovic said. “Being able to come back to Adelaide for this opportunity is something I’m very grateful for.

“Obviously finishing my career recently had me contemplating my next steps in football and coaching is something that I have always wanted to get into.

“Returning to the Reds and being able to give back to the Club that gave me so much over my time here is something I’m really looking forward to.

“Working with Paul, Daniel, and Isaac is going to be fulfilling for us all and I just can’t wait to get started.”

Adelaide United Chairman, Piet van der Pol, lauded the acquisition of Galekovic, saying: “It is fantastic to be welcoming back a true legend of this Club.

“Eugene is arguably the best goalkeeper the A-League has seen and to have his experience and wisdom at the forefront of our player development is very exciting.

“The appointment of Eugene reaffirms our commitment to reunite with past players in order to establish a strong culture within the Club as well as a more meaningful connection with the South Australian football community.”
