Gombau: Our focus switches to the FFA Cup Final

After Friday night’s loss to Brisbane Roar, coach Josep Gombau and the Reds are turning their attention to the Westfield FFA Cup on Tuesday night.

Gombau was disappointed with the result against the Roar, but he was happy with the efforts of the players.

“We all prepared like we do every other game and (especially) in the second half, we worked hard to try and get something.

“In the first minutes of the first half we weren’t finding our positions and we started playing long balls to get it out of defence.

“We just couldn’t find that pass we normally would when moving out from the back.”

Gombau was also adamant that the players focused on the Brisbane match just as they would for any other match.

“Our mind wasn’t on the cup – this is football, our players are professionals and focus on every match.”

He says the camp will re-watch the game and change things ahead of Tuesday night’s final.

“Fristly, we need to improve our finishing of course, because this is how you win games and win tournaments.

“We will make the changes and look at how we can improve for the final.”

There were a few notable players missing from the squad on Friday night, including central defender Nigel Boogaard (calf) and playmaker Marcelo Carrusca (quad).

Gombau stressed that these players were not 100% fit to take on the Roar.

“Nigel and Chelo would have played if they were okay, but they were not ready and so we had to keep them out.

“They are expected to be back in time for Tuesday night.”
