For Josh Smits, football in Adelaide has become something more than just performances and results. It’s something he genuinely enjoys every time he steps onto the pitch.
“Every time I stand on the pitch, I’m almost there with a smile,” Smits said.
“I really like the football culture here… I enjoy every moment.”
In his first season with United, the Dutch goalkeeper has quickly become a fan favourite — not just for his consistency between the posts, but for the way he has embraced life at the Club.
From packed nights at Coopers Stadium to travelling across the country, Smits says the experience has exceeded expectations.
“The A-League is a fantastic league,” he said.
“We play against great opponents, at great stadiums… there’s nothing I can complain about.”
That connection to the fans has been a major part of his journey so far, with Coopers Stadium providing a constant source of energy.

“I love Coopers Stadium,” Smits said.
“It’s almost full every time, and the energy is amazing. It helps us a lot.”
That positive mindset has helped underpin a strong season for both Smits and United.
After a run of performances that deserved more, the Reds were finally rewarded with a crucial 3-1 win over Macarthur FC, which secured Finals Football – something Smits said was a reflection of the belief within the group.
“We had good performances in the last weeks, but we ended up with one point each time,” he said.
“We trusted how we played was good, so to finally get the performance and the three points – it’s fantastic.”
That belief was on display again when United were forced to respond after conceding early.
Rather than panic, the group stayed composed, trusting their ability to control the game – especially at home.
“We knew what could happen,” Smits said.
“But we also knew we had 85 minutes left, and especially at home, we can dominate and create chances.”
As the home and away season reaches its defining stage at Melbourne City on Sunday, Smits is clear on what lies ahead – and what this group is capable of achieving.
“We strongly believe in ourselves,” he said.
“We’ve played every team, and there hasn’t been one game where we felt they were much better than us.”

It’s that belief – combined with enjoyment, connection, and confidence – that has the Reds entering the run home with momentum.
For Smits, the goal is simple.
“I like this stage of the season,” he said.
“This is what you play for… we’re playing for silverware.”
And with a smile on his face, Smits is ready for whatever comes next.
