Adelaide United were left to lament its missed chances against Wellington Phoenix on Sunday night, according to Captain Stefan Mauk.

Mauk fired Adelaide into the lead following an incredible team goal which involved a string of incisive passes before the 25-year-old provided the expert finish.

But the Reds failed to increase their buffer, squandering several good opportunities and were subsequently punished.

Ben Waine restored parity, despite the suggestion of an offside while Tomer Hemed converted a last-gasp 97th minute penalty to snatch a 2-1 win.

“We’re deflated of course, we were 1-0 up,” Mauk told Fox Sports after the match.

“When you go 1-0 up and we had a lot of good chances to probably put the game 2-0.

“We didn’t take them and you get caught like that at the end.

“We were going for the win and it’s just disappointing because we’ve become accustomed to winning because losing is not a nice feeling.”

Mauk felt his side grew into the contest and were the superior team, particularly in the second stanza.

However, he admitted that counts for little after its three-match unbeaten run ended, while enduring its second loss in 11 games.

“I think we probably didn’t play as well in the first-half and they set-up quite well defensively,” he said.

“Second-half I think we were all over them and we had some really good chances which is pleasing.

“But you can play as well as you like but if you lose it doesn’t really matter.”
