Following Adelaide United’s 2-2 draw with arch rivals Melbourne Victory on Saturday, defender, Dylan McGowan remains optimistic that the Premier’s Plate is still in reach with five matches still to play.
Having fallen behind in the 9th minute after Fahid Ben-Khalfallah’s sweetly struck goal, Adelaide rallied from behind to score two vitals goals courtesy of Pablo Sanchez and Dylan McGowan. However, Archie Thompson’s clever forward run enabled him to latch onto a pass from Gui Finkler and score comprehensively past Eugene Galekovic.
Despite not collecting the full three points, McGowan believes that if the Reds can show fight and win their last five games than there is no doubt they will be right in contention for the Premiers Plate.
“I think there will be a lot of twists and turns for the rest of the season.” McGowan said.
“We have two games coming up now that if we hopefully win, will put us right back in the mix for top spot.
“As long as you win as many games as you can, you’ll be right in with a chance of the Premiership.”
Dylan McGowan broke his drought in the Hyundai A-League on the weekend netting his first goal for the club. And although McGowan was pleased with his effort and the teams to get in front, it was disappointing for them not to hold on with 15 minutes left to play.
“With 15 minutes left to play you always think you should hold on, but we obviously got caught out basically straight after the goal which wasn’t a desirable outcome,” he explained.
“So that’s the disappointing aspect because we played so well and got in front with 15 minutes to play and we should have held on.”
McGowan continued by saying how well he thought the team played against Melbourne Victory, giving special mention to his team mates in the midfield as well as his fellow defenders. However, McGowan insists that the defence is still amongst one of the best in the league and believes that they are ready to shift their attention to the Newcastle Jets next weekend.
“In terms of how we have played all year we have one of the best defences in the league. So we go to Newcastle next weekend full of confidence knowing we need to keep them out to get three points”.
“We are definitely not happy by conceding two goals on Saturday, but I think we will correct that on the training track this week and hopefully get it right against Newcastle next weekend”.
Adelaide United will next travel to take on Newcastle Jets on Sunday 29 March 2015 at Hunter Stadium in Round 23 of the Hyundai A-League 2014/15 Season. Kick-off at 5:00pm (4:30pm ACDT).
