Adelaide United goalkeeper, Joe Gauci, says it was an easy decision to remain a Red, following the announcement of his new three-year contract.
The 22-year-old has solidified his spot as one of the most promising goalkeepers in the country after a string of outstanding performances over the last two seasons in particular.
Speaking to media at Coopers Stadium on Thursday morning, Gauci reflected on a whirlwind 12-to-24 months and looked ahead to facing Western United on Sunday.
His new contract:
“It was really a no brainer when I thought about what’s best for my football.
“For me, the most important thing is to continue to play and get that exposure and experience from playing senior football.
“And I’ve been lucky enough to have that over the last couple of years.
“Moving forward, I think the direction that the Club’s heading in with the players that we’ve got there, the core of our squad is locked in for the next few years, as well as the coaching staff, and off the field as well, all the stars have aligned for me and for my development as a footballer.”
Season so far:
“It’s been fantastic.
“I don’t think at the start of the year, I would have thought it would have gone this well.
“I think we (as a team) had full confidence in ourselves, especially over the last two seasons playing in two semi finals.
“And personally, there’s no complaints from me.
“At the start of the year, my goal was just to come in and start Round 1 and play every game of the season.
“But this is kind of the crunch time now and we’re really hoping that we can can push on and do something special.”
Western United challenge:
“I’m expecting a tough game.
“They’ve been in good form and now they can potentially play finals football.
“So they’re going to come here, they’re going to be attacking but, on their day, we know when they get it right, they’re also very hard to score against.
“But we’re at home, we’re playing at Coopers in front of our fantastic fans, so we’re hoping we can put a few past them.”
