NPL SA Round 8 Recap: Young Reds undefeated streak ends against Comets

Adelaide United Youth’s unbeaten run has abruptly ended following a 3-1 defeat to Adelaide Comets in a tempestuous affair at the VALO Football Centre on Saturday.

Carlo Armiento’s equaliser just after half-time was quickly rendered inconsequential as the visitors scored five minutes later and then added an insurance goal in the 83rd minute.

Pacifique Niyongabire also received his marching orders in stoppage time after being brandished a second yellow card.

Adelaide started the game strongly, dominating possession though failed to test the Comets ‘keeper and fell behind in the 28th minute.

Comets took the lead against the run of play when they were awarded a penalty after Aladin Irabona clipped the legs of Nathan Andijanto on 27 minutes.

Allan Welsh stepped up and calmly converted the subsequent spot-kick, sending goalkeeper Isaac Richards the wrong way.

After the re-start, Armiento restored parity, but it was only fleeting, as he latched on to a through ball before seeing his finish deflect under the goalkeeper and in.

However, just as the Young Reds appeared to get settled into the match again they conceded courtesy of a clinical Stefan Simic effort.

Adelaide probed but could not breakdown a disciplined Comets defensive unit and lacked cohesion at times in attack.

The match at times was also very stop, start, particularly in the second-half with countless niggling fouls made, disrupting the momentum, with a total of six yellow cards were issued.

Back on the football, and Andreas Wiens quashed any hopes of a United Youth comeback when he unleashed a bouncing strike which dipped into the bottom corner and beyond a helpless Richards.

The result ends a run of four matches without a loss as they will look to bounce back against South Adelaide in a fortnight.
