NPLSA Round 19 Recap: Young Reds held to stalemate with Olympic

Adelaide United Youth has been held to a 1-1 draw with Adelaide Olympic, snapping a four-game losing streak in the process.

Jonny Yull continued his strong run of form, breaking the deadlock thanks to his fifth goal of the season.

The midfielder was spotted by Nestor Irankunda and his deft first touch evaded the attentions of the incoming defender before clinically finishing past goalkeeper Lewis Moss.

However, United’s lead was short-lived at Jack Smith Park as Fausto Erba equalised six minutes later.

Joe Gauci also featured in goal for the Young Reds, producing an excellent save to deny Jason Konstandopoulos’s long-range strike.

But it was the hosts that squandered a couple of golden chances during the contest which ultimately prevented them from collecting a vital three points.

In the 21st minute an unmarked Bernardo saw his first-time attempt from six-yards blocked following a low cross by Mohamed Toure.

Following the restart, Irankunda had just the ‘keeper to beat though he fired straight at Moss after being released by Noah McNamara.

And six minutes from time, Yull put wide a half-volley opportunity when Moss parried Irankunda’s cross right at the youngster from close range.

United Youth lie in ninth spot on 22 points, four points above the relegation zone and take on bottom side Adelaide Blue Eagles at Marden on Tuesday night.
