Preview: Melbourne City v Adelaide United

Melbourne City’s all-star side will have another chance to extend a remarkable opening to their first Westfield W-League season when Adelaide United visit on Saturday.

It will be a small milestone moment in the club’s Westfield W-League history as they play their first suburban home match, leaving aside their round three outing at AAMI Park.

Lisa De Vanna will miss the match having received a two-match suspension following her red card in last weekend’s encounter against Canberra United. But City, of course, still have talent all over the park not least of all superstar imports Jess Fishlock and Kim Little, the latter having been named player of the match on her full debut last Sunday in the 4-2 win over Canberra United.

Notably, City welcome Brianna Davey into the squad for the first time, with the Westfield Matildas goalkeeper returning to action following a lengthy absence from top-flight football.

Most will have marked this contest down as a likely one-sided affair, but Adelaide have shown themselves to be the revelation of the competition thus far. A settled line-up and the strong guiding hand of new coach Jamie Harnwell have proven to be a profitable combination.

Adelaide proved their unexpected 2-1 win at Brisbane Roar was no fluke by routing Melbourne Victory last weekend with four unanswered goals.
