Reds defeat the Bulls

Zach Clough scores against Macarthur FC

Adelaide United climbed up to fourth in the Isuzu UTE A-League and they had a lot to thank Joe Gauci for after their 1-0 win over Macarthur FC.

Zach Clough scored the only goal of the match in the sixth minute at Coopers Stadium, where Adelaide and Macarthur both had a player sent off on Friday night.

Adelaide defender Ben Warland was sent off in the 16th minute, while Jake Hollman received a second yellow card in the second half.

As the Reds fought off the desperate Bulls, Adelaide goalkeeper, Joe Gauci, stepped up with a number of stunning saves to keep Macarthur at bay.

Adelaide were missing their central defensive pairing of Lachlan Barr (injury) and Alexandar Popović (suspension), while Isaías and Juande were also both suspended for the clash.

Nick Ansell was given his first start for the season while Warland was thrown straight into the starting line-up after a lengthy layoff through injury.

The Reds made the perfect start, breaking the deadlock on six minutes through Clough.

Craig Goodwin sent in a corner and Warland rose highest and headed it goalward. Clough controlled it with his thigh before poking it over the line from inside the six-yard box.

Just before half-time, Adelaide had a glorious opportunity to double their lead when Clough picked up possession on the right wing and whipped in a cross which Hiroshi Ibusuki met but his header went agonisingly wide.

The result sent Adelaide up to fourth in the standings, two points clear of sixth-placed Macarthur.
