Reds downed 2-0 by Jets in Newcastle

Adelaide United Women have suffered a 2-0 loss to Newcastle Jets Women at McDonald Jones Stadium on Saturday night.

A contentious second-half penalty and a late finish 12 minutes from time completed the Jets’ victory and meant the Reds drop to the bottom of the ladder.

Ivan Karlović made one enforced change to the starting XI which defeated Western Sydney Wanderers 3-2 last weekend. Lais Araujo was suspended due to the accumulation of yellow cards, with Emily Hodgson returning to defence and pushing Charlotte Grant onto the wing. New signing Ella Tonkin featured on the bench.

Both teams struggled to create any real threatening chances in the opening exchanges, despite Adelaide venturing forward a couple of times.

Grant saw a couple of efforts blocked before Newcastle enjoyed the best opportunity of the half on 20 minutes.

Tara Andrews unleashed an incredible half-volley on the turn from distance and it smashed the crossbar and bounced out.

The Reds controlled more of the game closer to half-time, finishing the opening 45 the stronger of the two sides.

Amber Brooks conceded a penalty in the second stanza on 52 minutes when the referee spotted a handball. Replays suggested it was a rather harsh call and much to the dismay of the United captain.

Andrews subsequently slotted the spot-kick to put the hosts and they doubled their advantage through substitute Renee Pountney.

A cross from the right fell to her at the back post and she kept her composure before emphatically rifling her attempt home on 78 minutes.
