Adelaide United will compete in the AFC Champions League Two this season after falling 2-0 to Công An Hà Nội in Tuesday night’s AFC Champions League Elite Preliminary Stage clash at Hindmarsh Stadium.
Goals either side of half-time proved the difference on a frustrating night at Hindmarsh, as the Vietnamese visitors produced a professional performance to progress to the continent’s Elite competition.
Despite the cold conditions, 6,471 supporters packed into Hindmarsh Stadium for United’s first match in Asian competition in almost a decade.
Airton Andrioli made one change to the side that faced South Melbourne in the Australia Cup, with Harry Crawford coming into the starting XI in place of Luke Duzel before the youngster travels to the Netherlands for the Otten Innovation Cup on Wednesday.
Công An Hà Nội arrived in Adelaide without six regulars due to international duty, but began the contest confidently amid a tense and physical opening.
Craig Goodwin looked to catch goalkeeper Filip Nguyen off guard inside two minutes, spotting him off his line and attempting an audacious effort from near halfway, but the visitors survived the early scare.
Hà Nội responded two minutes later when Colombian forward Koko turned outside the area and fired narrowly past Joshua Smits’ left-hand post.
United had its first genuine opportunity in the eighth minute after Adou Minh was shown yellow for catching Juan Muñiz with a raised arm just outside the penalty area.
Muñiz stepped up for the resulting free-kick and curled his effort agonisingly past the post.
The intensity continued as both sides committed strongly to challenges, with Pana Kikianis going into the book in the 21st minute following a late tackle on former Red Stefan Mauk.
Making his 50th Adelaide United appearance, Ryan White then went close four minutes later, opening his body and looking to place an effort into the top corner, only to narrowly miss the target.
Crawford was somewhat harshly shown a yellow card on the half-hour mark after appearing to win the ball in a challenge. Mauk delivered the resulting free-kick into the area, but United defended the danger.
The Reds began to grow into the contest as the first half progressed, finding some promising patterns in possession.
Crawford created another opening in the 36th minute, driving a dangerous ball across the face of goal, but Jonny Yull and Ethan Alagich were unable to provide the finishing touch.
However, with five minutes remaining before half-time, the visitors struck.
Koko released David Henen with a through ball and the forward managed to get in front of Kikianis before sliding his finish underneath Smits to give Hà Nội the lead and spark celebrations among the travelling Vietnamese supporters.
United emerged brightly after the restart and went close to finding an equaliser in the 52nd minute.
On his 100th appearance for the Club, Alagich drove purposefully towards goal and forced Nguyen into a save, before Yull fired the rebound over the crossbar, although the midfielder was subsequently flagged offside.
Just as Andrioli prepared to introduce a triple substitution, Hà Nội doubled its advantage following a swift counterattack down the right.
The visitors moved quickly into the final third before Koko finished the move to make it 2-0.
Andrioli introduced Brody Burkitt, Anselmo and new signing Jacob Brazete, who made his Adelaide United debut, in place of Yull, Goodwin and Muñiz.
The Reds continued to push for a way back into the contest, with Talladira dragging an effort wide in the 71st minute.
Anselmo’s physical presence began to cause the visitors problems, while Burkitt and Brazete both provided energy in the attacking third as United attempted to break through a well-organised Hà Nội defence.
Duzel was introduced for Talladira for the closing stages, while White sent a long-range strike over the crossbar in the 84th minute.
United continued to press until the final whistle but could not find a way through a disciplined Hà Nội side, bringing a frustrating night at Hindmarsh to an end.
The result sees Công An Hà Nội advance to the AFC Champions League Elite, while Adelaide United will now enter the AFC Champions League Two.
The group-stage draw will take place in Kuala Lumpur next week.
