Adelaide United Youth has come from behind to record a 2-2 draw with Adelaide Olympic in Round 9 of the National Premier League at Smith Partners Stadium on Sunday.
Lachlan Brook rescued a point for the Young Reds after they had initially taken the lead, but Olympic struck twice with two goals in six minutes in the second-half.
The result extends Adelaide’s unbeaten run to four matches and maintains their status in the top six – two points clear of the seventh-placed Olympic.
Adelaide dominated the opening exchanges without creating a whole lot of opportunities, however they soon found the opener.
An own goal put United ahead in the 21st minute when Carlo Armiento’s shot ricocheted off Manley Barnett after Pacifique Niyonbagire squared a ball into the area.
Their first-half advantage was soon extinguished after the interval thanks to goals from Christos Pounendis and Antoni Trimboli.
But moments later, Adelaide returned serve as Brook got the Reds back on level terms in stunning fashion, courtesy of a beautiful long-range strike.
Nothing could separate the two sides for the remaining half an hour and it finished all square on a warm and sunny afternoon at Ridgehaven.
Paul Pezos’ side takes on West Adelaide in Round 10 of the National Premier League at Rushworth Reserve on Saturday.
Key moments:
21’ | GOAL! Niyongabire regains possession for his team and delivers a low cross into the area which Armiento meets, however the final touch came off an Olympic defender.
53’ | The visitors are awarded a penalty for an apparent shove on Trimboli inside the area.
54’ | GOAL: Olympic equalise from the penalty spot as Pounendis makes no mistake, sending his effort into the top right corner.
60’ | GOAL: Olympic overturn the deficit with a swift counter-attack. Trimboli is played through, and he manages to generate enough power on his shot to beat Isaac Richards, despite the goalkeeper getting a good glove on it.
62’ | GOAL! The Young Reds level proceedings, capitalising on a turnover ending in Apostolos Stamatelopoulos laying the ball to Brook, who unleashes a dipping effort from outside the 18-yard box and into the top corner.
