Laura Johns says Adelaide United Women have made significant improvement as a team since Ivan Karlović has been at the helm.

The Reds experienced their most successful season last year but fell one point short of reaching a maiden finals appearance.

Speaking at the Club’s 2019/20 Season Launch, Johns hailed the impact Karlović has had on the team and turning them into a competitive outfit.

“I think my first season was in 2012 and for a while I left and went to the States and played,” she said.

“And every single year we had a different coach that had a different philosophy every year.

“But I think since Ivan has come on board I haven’t seen us do so well since the beginning of the W-League.

“He’s been great and I’ve to give credit to Ivan because he’s done a good job.”

The 25-year-old has amassed 27 matches for the Reds and was a consistent presence in defence after cementing her spot at left-back last campaign.

Over the off-season she played again with Adelaide University in the local Women’s National Premier League (WNPL), before re-signing with the side ahead of the Westfield W-League 2019/20 campaign.

Johns also spoke about balancing work or study with playing football.

“I think people don’t quite understand that we jump from training every day to potentially studying full-time or working full-time,” Johns admitted.

“But you get used to it and you find things that work. A lot of girls do it and I think it works well.

“We figure things out and then we start training again.”
