Adelaide United missed the chance to strengthen their grip on fourth spot as they had to settle for a scrappy 0-0 away draw against Newcastle Jets on Sunday.

Craig Goodwin had the best chance of the match when he struck the crossbar, but it was a game where the Reds ultimately flattered to deceive – unable to create enough meaningful opportunities.

However, on the balance of play a point each was probably a fair result as undermanned Adelaide avoided a second straight loss.

Michael Marrone marked his return to the starting line-up for his 200th Hyundai A-League appearance, replacing Jordan Elsey at centre-back after sustaining an injury last time out. It was the 32-year-old’s first start in five games, while it was Paul Izzo’s 50th league game for Adelaide.

Meanwhile, George Blackwood retained his place in the side following a string of impressive outings, pivoting between an attacking midfielder and second striker.

Adelaide settled quicker of the two sides and began to enjoy possession on the edge of the Newcastle box.

But despite probing, the Reds lacked end product as crosses failed to find targets in the area.

Chances were very much few and far between in the first-half, but as half-time approached Goodwin fashioned the best opportunity.

Isaías released the winger who beat the attentions of Nigel Boogard before driving forward and striking his effort off the crossbar.

The second 45 virtually mirrored the first stanza with chances arriving at a premium.

Dutch striker, Jordy Thomassen, felt he should have received a penalty after a coming together as he tried to steer home Goodwin’s low delivery.

Newcastle threatened on occasion as the game became stretched midway during the interval.

However, neither team could find an opening as it finished all square at McDonald Jones Stadium.

Key moments:

42’ | CHANCE! Goodwin evades his marker while dribbling at pace and rattles the crossbar with a thunderous one-on-one shot.

59’ | Thomassen appears to have been fouled in the box trying to meet Goodwin’s right-footed cross, though the referee waves away the protests.

79’ | Boland’s audacious attempt to chip Glen Moss off his line almost comes to fruition, but the ‘keeper gets back in time.
