Reds Rewind – Carl Veart scores first A-League goal

Our Reds Rewind series returns as today marks the 15th anniversary of Carl Veart scoring the inaugural goal in the history of the Hyundai A-League.

The very first game of the newly-formed competition pitted Adelaide United away to Newcastle Jets to launch the season.

It was an entertaining contest and having scored United’s first-ever goal back in 2003 in the then National Soccer League, it would be Veart who netted the league’s maiden goal nearly two years later.

His 19th minute header proved the difference on the night as the Reds recorded a 1-0 win.

Ross Aloisi flicked a long ball into his path before executing a perfectly-weighted cross which met the glancing head of the veteran attacker.

Carl on that historic night and scoring the competition’s maiden goal…

“I suppose it was an exciting time because it was the start of the A-League and it was something new that was going to be something better than what we had before,” he said.

“We were fortunate enough to have the first game, so I suppose we didn’t really know what to expect to be honest.

“There was a good crowd up at Newcastle and to come away with a win in the first A-League game that was something fairly special that we can have as players and the Club can have.

“And to score that goal it was a very big highlight for myself.”
