Our Reds Rewind series continues with a look at Fabian Barbiero’s jaw-dropping strike in the Preliminary Final against Brisbane Roar back in 2009.
If ever there was an occasion where a player craved the adulation for making their mark in a high-pressure situation then this would be right up there. To do it in undeniably spectacular fashion, like Barbiero did, also helps too.
Heading into their do-or-die final following a heavy aggregate loss to arch rivals Melbourne Victory, Adelaide were determined to make amends against the Roar at Coopers Stadium.
And the fans in attendance witnessed one of the greatest goals ever scored in finals history.
A long ball from goalkeeper Eugene Galekovic was headed down by a contesting Cristiano. The young midfielder controlled the ball and unleashed a sublime half-volley from the edge of the 18-yard box.
His shot ricocheted in off the apex of the top left corner, and it fittingly decided the outcome of the match as the Reds secured its second Grand Final appearance.
Barbiero on that stunning strike…
“That was the goal to get us in the Grand Final against Melbourne Victory,” Barbiero recalled.
“And entry to the Champions League for that next season.
“I think the ball came from Eugene, and Cristiano went up for a header with Craig Moore and the ball spilt to me.
“I was just waiting for a flick on, I was maybe waiting for a flick and it sort of bounced in my path and I thought I’m just going to have a crack here.
“It was definitely one of the best goals I’ve scored in my career and a vital one too so it was very special.”
