Our Reds Rewind series takes us back to when Travis Dodd scored a match-winning header against fierce rivals Melbourne Victory at Adelaide Oval.
On the final round of the 2010/11 season, Adelaide United needed the three points to confirm third spot on the table and thus a home Elimination Final.
With the score deadlocked at 1-1 after Archie Thompson cancelled out Paul Reid’s opener, Captain Travis Dodd delivered with 12 minutes remaining.
Iain Ramsay’s accurate set-piece found Dodd unmarked in the box, who connected by looping his well-placed header into the top right corner, sending the majority 21,083 crowd into jubilant scenes.
Dodd on that looping header…
“That type of game against Melbourne Victory and that kind of stuff they’re always big games and always important games to win,” he said.
“So to be able to score against them like I did, I mean from memory it was almost on the 18-yard box or somewhere around there.
“You just see those deliveries come in and I didn’t score too many with my head over the years, so to be able to get one from that distance I guess was a pretty special moment.
“And especially at Adelaide Oval with the crowd that was there as well.”
