Adelaide United is delighted to announce experienced Danish centre-back and former Melbourne City FC Captain, Michael Jakobsen, has signed a two-year deal with the Club.
Jakobsen’s contract means he will be with the Reds until the end of the 2019/20 season.
The 32-year-old was most recently at Melbourne City FC and has played five games for the Danish national team.
Jakobsen brings a plethora of experience to Marco Kurz’s team, having previously amassed more than 200 appearances in the Danish Super Liga, predominantly with Aalborg BK as well as Esbjerg fB, FC Copenhagen, and FC Nordsjælland.
The central defender has also played for Spanish outfit Almeria in La Liga and the Segunda División and had a brief spell at the beginning of his career at Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven.
Jakobsen said he was excited to be joining the Reds and is eager to help bring silverware to Adelaide.
“I’m excited because it’s a new chapter of my career and I’m really looking forward to getting started,” he said. “I’ve heard only positive things about Adelaide United, so that was a big part of my decision.
“People have said Adelaide is a good city especially for small families and I have a small family so it’s perfect.
“The team had a good season last year and the ambitions are high at the Club, which is what I like and this suits me well.
“I want to win games and I want to win titles and hopefully I can contribute to doing that with Adelaide.”
Adelaide United Head Coach, Marco Kurz, said Jakobsen’s excellent leadership qualities and experience would be of major benefit to his team.
“We are delighted to have Michael join us for the next two seasons,” Kurz said. “He is a very experienced defender and has had a very good career in Europe and also with Melbourne City in the A-League.
“He has played for the Danish national team and was Melbourne City’s captain last season, so he will bring a lot of leadership to our group, which will be fantastic for our young players.”
