Adelaide United’s 12-match unbeaten run has come to an end in a 1-0 A-League Men defeat to Western United at Coopers Stadium.
Just after the half hour, Adelaide’s Louis D’Arrigo miscued his cross into the area which wrong-footed Western keeper Jamie Young, who spilled the ball after colliding with the post, but Craig Goodwin put the subsequent rebound wide.
On 43 minutes, the Reds’ Javi Lopez won possession in midfield and threaded a pass for Goodwin, who cut inside and shot with his right from just inside the area, but his effort was straight at Young.
A minute later and Western broke the deadlock through Connor Pain.
Adelaide’s Ben Halloran headed over on 55 minutes before Isaías crossed for Hiroshi Ibusuki, whose angled header forced an impressive save from Young minutes later.
On 82 minutes a deep cross from Adelaide’s Ryan Kitto found substitute Nestory Irankunda, who controlled the ball and cut inside before firing at goal. His shot was well blocked by some desperate defending from Western.
Lachie Barr almost equalised in injury time when he struck the upright with a powerful header, after rising highest to meet a corner from Goodwin.
