It was a tough day at the office for Adelaide United’s Reserves following a 5-1 loss in the Preliminary Final against Adelaide Comets on Saturday.

The Young Reds started the brighter of the two teams and in fact opened the scoring through Peter Katsambis inside 11 minutes at Adelaide City Park.

Daniel Bressan’s shot was parried into the path of Katsambis, who made no mistake on the follow up.

However, it went downhill from there as United conceded twice in quick succession. Lansana Smith equalised with a neat angled finish, before Stephan Travaglione made it 2-1 from close range.

After the re-start, Comets doubled their advantage from the penalty spot courtesy of Travaglione.

And in the 65th minute, the game was all but over as Anthony Mavrolambados slotted an indirect free-kick into the roof of the net.

Smith would complete the one-sided contest, dispatching a one-on-one effort into the top left corner.

The Preliminary Final defeat means United will be unable to defend their Championship in next weekend’s Grand Final.
