Rising Star Carina Rossi Shines in Adelaide United’s Landmark A-League Women’s Away Win

Adelaide United Head Coach Theo Tsiounis praised his side’s grit after the Reds claimed their first away win against Newcastle Jets in five years after coming back from a goal behind in the mid-week fixture.

Second half goals from Erin Healy and 18-year-old young gun, Carina Rossi capped off a huge come-from-behind win, our first for an away game in eight years, to extend United’s unbeaten run to five.

Tsiounis on the immediate emotions having fought back to get the win on the road…
“It was a tough game against a strong Newcastle side. To break a five-year away drought here is really pleasing. It’s always a difficult place to pick up points, so the result is a credit to the group.”

Tsiounis on breaking records and reaching new milestones last night…
“It’s always nice to reach new milestones. The group has worked extremely hard and I think the results are deserved. In earlier games we controlled long periods without being able to capitalise. Last night, we took our opportunities and defended with real grit.”

Tsiounis on the impact of his half-time substitutions…
“We felt the game would open up and allow our creative players [Erin Healy and Adriana Taranto] more time and space to influence the contest. The game played out largely as we anticipated, and the players executed their roles well.”

Tsiounis on Carina Rossi’s debut A-League Women’s goal…
“Carina has been outstanding. She’s an emerging talent with great mobility, strong technical ability, and an eye for goal. She’s a player we see as a long-term prospect and someone we’re committed to continuing to invest in.”

Tsiounis on Sarah Morgan’s milestone 50th match and contribution to the side…
“Sarah is the definition of resilience and courage. Her performance last night was exceptional and she fully deserves to be recognised for that milestone.”

Tsiounis on the demanding schedule and group culture…
“The short turnaround between games is challenging, but it also creates opportunities for others to contribute. We talk a lot about leaving the jersey in a better place, not just at the end of the season but after every match.”
