Smits Settles In: Smits assured on Debut and Soaks Up the Coopers Stadium Atmosphere

Adelaide United’s new goalkeeper, Joshua Smits, has described his A-League Men’s debut at Coopers Stadium as “fantastic”, after playing in the Reds’ 2-1 opening round win over Sydney FC on Friday night.

The Dutch shot-stopper looked calm and assured throughout the contest in front of 11,708 fans, producing a comfortable performance to help secure the three points.

Speaking to Rowey and Timmy G on FIVEaa, Smits praised the electric Coopers Stadium atmosphere and the influence of the home crowd on the team’s performance.

“It was really good – a lot of people making noise and really backing us,” Smits said.

“That’s what we need, and it helped us to get the three points.

If we have this support every home game, it can be a really nice season.”

While fans and pundits alike praised his debut performance, the 32-year-old was characteristically modest when reflecting on his night.

“I think I played a decent game – I just tried to give the team confidence that nothing was going to happen in our box,” he said.

“That’s my job, to stay calm and relaxed. It wasn’t an insane game, I just did what I needed to do, and I’m happy to help the team.”

Smits was also impressed by the team’s structure and the blend of youth and experience in United’s ranks.

“We played really good football out from the back and created a lot of chances,” he said.

“We’ve got really good quality and depth — young guys like Ethan Alagich and experienced players like Craig Goodwin and Juan Muñiz.

It’s a good balance, and everyone will be needed this season.”

The former Norwegian league goalkeeper added that life in Adelaide has been “fantastic” since his arrival, with his family set to join him in the coming weeks.

“It’s chill, no worries – I love it here,” Smits laughed.

“My family comes over in two weeks, just before the next home game, so the full experience can start.”

Adelaide United now turn their attention to Monday’s away clash with Macarthur FC, followed by another away day in Auckland, as they look to build on a strong opening-round performance before returning home to Coopers Stadium on Friday, 7 November, to face Western Sydney Wanderers.
