Squadron Leader Ben Cowan praises United partnership

Squadron Leader Ben Cowan has praised the continued relationship between the ADF and Adelaide United.

Squadron Leader Ben Cowan, who is also the Australian Defence Force (ADF) Open Men’s Football Team coach, has praised the continued relationship between the ADF and Adelaide United ahead of Friday’s Remembrance Day curtain raiser.

Representatives from all three factions of the ADF – Navy, Army, and Air Force – will play a friendly match against an Adelaide United Legends squad to commemorate Remembrance Day and the sacrifices made by servicemen and servicewomen for our nation.

Squadron Leader Ben Cowan highlighted the significance of Remembrance Day and why an occasion like Friday’s game is so important.

“Remembrance Day is obviously quite a significant day on our calendar for commemoration of sacrifices that have been made (by servicemen and servicewomen).

“From a ADF footballers perspective, the chance to pull on the jersey that represents all three services is quite a milestone.

“Just to be able to get amongst it and on a great stadium and a great occasion, they (the players) get little bit excited and we let them enjoy that moment.

“COVID’s derailed a few things that we’d like to be able to do as an ADF football family because we’ve also got a masters team and a women’s team and we will try to get them opportunities as well.

“For us this (game) reflects quite a long-standing relationship we’ve had with Adelaide United, which was one of the first clubs to get on-board to develop a relationship with Defence.

“We’re really keen to honour that (partnership) and have these games and have these opportunities, which serves, no doubt, as a little bit of enthusiasm for people to be involved in it.”

The day will also be acknowledging the work of the Poppy Appeal, who for more than 100 years, have supported Australian veterans and their families.

Donating to the Poppy Appeal will help the RSL continue to deliver life-changing support to our veterans when they need it the most.
