Shengqing Qu punctuated New Year’s Day 2006 with an absolutely sensational goal in Adelaide United’s 4-2 win over Brisbane Roar at Coopers Stadium.
The Reds had just equalised courtesy of Carl Veart converting an initially saved penalty on the follow up and a minute later he turned provider.
The former China international collected the ball from Veart outside the box and turned forward and as he surveyed his options, spotted goalkeeper Tom Willis off his line.
Qu did not need a second invitation and had the audacity, awareness and confidence to chip the gloveman from the edge of the 18-yard box and leaving him helpless.
It was a stunning effort and arguably the best of his seven goals for United during the inaugural A-League 2005/06 campaign.
Qu believes that brilliant goal is up there with some of the best in his career.
“The goal I scored against Brisbane Roar, was a beautiful goal,” Qu recalled, as John Kosmina’s side went on to clinch the inaugural Premiers’ Plate that season.
“I saw the ‘keeper a little bit far from the goal line, so I decided to lob it.
“It’s one of the most beautiful goals I scored in my memory.”
