Veart – “Auckland Have Set the Benchmark, But We’re Up for It”

Reds Head Coach Carl Veart fronted the media ahead of Adelaide United’s top-of-the-table clash against Auckland FC, joining opposition coach Steve Corica in a rare joint press conference.

Veart reflected on his team’s preparations, the challenge ahead, and the importance of closing the gap at the top of the table.

Veart on facing Auckland FC and the last meeting between the teams…

“It’s proven very difficult for all the teams this year. Credit to Steve—he’s organized an excellent squad, and they’ve been playing some excellent football. We know it’s going to be a tough game. We went close last time, and hopefully, we can go that one step further this time.

“I thought it was one of the most exciting games of the season. The intensity for the full 100 minutes was excellent, and I expect that again tomorrow. Both teams will have a good crack, and hopefully, we play some good football and manage to get the win.”

Veart on key Auckland players and their success this season…

“The obvious ones are May and Mata—they’ve formed a strong combination up front. That’s one area we’ll have to watch closely. Their midfield also works extremely hard, so it’s important we move the ball well to create openings and give ourselves the chance to score.

“It might have caught people by surprise, but Steve is a great operator. He’s put together such a strong squad with no real weaknesses. That’s what has surprised people—these are players who haven’t played much in the league before, yet they’ve gelled so quickly. Credit to Steve and his staff for organising them so well in such a short time. It’s great for the league to see a new team come in and do things the right way, getting strong support and connecting with the community in Auckland.”

Veart on keeping the title race close and responding to recent form…

“It’s massively important for us. The last few weeks haven’t been great, so we need a response from the playing group tomorrow. If Auckland win, they’ve probably secured the Premier’s Plate, so if we want to keep our aspirations alive, we have to win.

“Last week was probably one of our worst performances of the season. We made a few mistakes and got punished, and we didn’t create much either. It was a wake-up call for the playing group. We haven’t had a great month, but we’ve reviewed that game, and now our full focus is on Auckland.”

Veart on conceding late in the last game…

“Yes, I certainly remember it. That’s just the way it is sometimes. Coaches always have moments where they question things, but at the end of the day, we have to play what’s in front of us. We switched off, and they capitalised.

“That’s football. It’s a game of opinions, and everyone has different views. I think the referees have done a good job this season. They’ve let games flow more than in previous years, which is important, especially in a match like tomorrow’s, where both teams want to play.”

Veart on playing in front of a big crowd in Auckland…

“A big crowd always improves the spectacle. We’re fortunate to play at Coopers Stadium, where 12-13,000 creates an incredible atmosphere that lifts the players. Auckland have had fantastic support, and last week’s 27,000 crowd was an amazing atmosphere to watch as a neutral. When you have two good teams playing in front of a big crowd, it makes for a great spectacle. That’s what the A-League needs.”

Veart on squad fitness and preparations in Auckland…

“It’s pretty much the same squad. We’re down to the last few fit players in the club, as we have several away with the national team and a couple of injuries. But we still have a strong squad, and I’m confident that the players selected will get the job done.

“The response has been good. We’ve come to Auckland a couple of days earlier than usual for an away game, which has helped the team bond. The players have spent more time together, and hopefully, that helps us get back to where we were earlier in the season.

“The hospitality has been excellent, the hotel has been great, and the weather has been perfect. We’ve really enjoyed it, and we’re looking forward to a great game tomorrow.”

Veart on the South Australian players in the U20 Asian Cup final…

“We’ll definitely be watching. It’s great to see young Australian players doing well. It’s been a while since we’ve had a successful underage national team, and it’s important for the future of the Socceroos. Australian football has taken a few knocks recently, so it’s fantastic to see a side performing well and young talent emerging.”
