Adelaide United can confirm that Head Coach, Gertjan Verbeek, will depart South Australia for the Netherlands on Wednesday, 8 April but will return to Adelaide if and when the Hyundai A-League 2019/20 season recommences.
After meeting with Chairman, Piet van der Pol, on Saturday, it was agreed that Verbeek could leave with his family due to the uncertainty surrounding the re-commencement of the Hyundai A-League and potential closure of the Dutch borders.
“We spoke about the current situation and agreed it made sense that he joined his wife, Sabine, and young daughter, Sinne, in returning to Holland,” explained van der Pol.
“In unpredicted times like these, the health and safety of family is the most important thing.
“Our chat was a very open one and he now understands a bit more about the situation and the challenges of the Club.
“He is still contracted and will seek a return if the league starts up again.”
Verbeek said: “I am leaving with my family as they’re worried there might be a lockdown, not only here in Australia but also back in Holland.
“Due to the uncertainty of the league and imminent closure of borders, I feel it’s right to return home.”
