Much has been made of a couple of goal scoring chances Djite missed early in the match against Perth Glory last Sunday. While Djite is the first one to put up his hand and admit he may have done better, one of the Reds- original cult figures and crowd favourites is certainly not the first striker to ever have an off day.
This is something fellow Reds forwards Dario Vidosic and Sergio van Dijk are both well aware of and they know it will not be long before Djite is back on target.
“Those things happen, you look at even Fernando Torres, he-s one of the best strikers in the world and he went through a much longer spell than a couple of games without scoring, so we-re sure Bruce will put a few away against Wellington and we-ll get the three points,” Vidosic said.
A fellow marksman who also knows what it has felt like to rue missed opportunities in games, van Dijk still has full faith in Djite-s goal scoring potency and ability to find the back of the net. Last season-s Golden Boot winner believes the true reflection will be on how Djite bounces back.
“I think that just happens sometimes. It can happen to any striker at any level,” van Dijk said.
“Once in awhile you miss one but you have to stay confident and I think that-s what strikers at a high level do – they turn around and say that the next one is going in, and if that doesn-t go in then the next one.”
“It-s a difficult thing but that-s what we are professional for and that-s how we have to handle the situation.”
Ahead of Friday night-s game against Wellington, interestingly it was Djite that scored the opening goal in a 2-0 win over the Phoenix when the sides last met back in Week 13.
