In what has been a busy fortnight of contract extensions at the Reds, Watson is the next confirmed piece of the jigsaw puzzle that Coach John Kosmina will have at his disposal going forward.
On his decision to remain at the Reds, Watson put much of it down to the prospect of exciting times ahead and an intent at wanting to keep the majority of the current playing group together, a sentiment echoed just days ago by Bruce Djite after he signed a new deal.
“We-ve got a good group, everyone gets along, we-re doing well and if we can keep a lot of the players together I think we can be successful,” Watson said.
“I think keeping that foundation of a group is important and has been one of the main reasons I want to stay, and I also enjoy being in Adelaide and I just want it to continue.”
The Melbourne born 25 year old who has been a solid contributor after arriving from the Victorian Premier League, said a large proportion of his decision came down to being more than content in Adelaide.
“Being settled here was big reason that came into it,” Watson said.
“You never close the door to other options but I-ve been really happy here and I think if you-re happy it brings the best out of you. I always wanted to stay and I-m just looking forward to the next couple of years.”
A former Australian U-20 representative who also played club football in Portugal and Holland, Watson has been thrust into various roles during his time at the Reds.
He has been used as a makeshift right back, proving more than capable in the position, while also playing in his more accustomed spot in midfield.
Regardless of what job he is given, Watson enjoys the challenge and Kosmina believes the various arrows in Watson-s bow, coupled with the type of character he is around the club, makes him a valuable part of the Reds- make up.
“Cam is our Mr Versatile,” Kosmina said.
“He-s technically very correct, he-s got a great engine and he-s another one who I think has his best football in front of him.”
“He can play in a range of positions – he can play as a full back which he-s shown, as well as range of roles in the midfield, and he-s a great guy to have around the club.”
Since making his Hyundai A-League debut against the Newcastle Jets in August 2010, Watson-s Adelaide United tally currently reads 63 appearances, although he is yet to score a Hyundai A-League goal, something he now has another two years to achieve.
Watson-s re-signing follows the recent two year contract extensions of Cassio, Jeronimo Neumann, Fabio Ferreira and Djite.
