Adelaide United’s Young Reds have suffered a 3-0 defeat against reigning champions Croydon FC in a hard-fought contest at Regency Park.
With a number of changes to the starting XI from the previous week’s draw against Adelaide Comets, the Young Reds welcomed back several A-League Men players, with Max Vartuli returning between the posts, Sotiri Phillis captaining the side, and Joey Garuccio all providing valuable experience.
Bae Versace also earned his first start of the season after spending the majority of the campaign with the reserves, while Daniel Wojcik continued his run in the starting lineup.

The Young Reds started strongly and controlled much of the opening half, dominating possession and creating a number of promising opportunities against the reigning champions. Despite their control and ability to move the ball effectively, Adelaide were unable to find the breakthrough before the interval.
After a positive opening 45 minutes, Croydon capitalised on moments in transition in the second half, scoring twice on the counterattack to take control of the contest. The hosts then added a third goal through a quality finish from a corner to seal all three points.

Despite the result, Head Coach Paul Vanis was pleased with aspects of his side’s performance and highlighted the importance of continuing to learn from challenging moments.
“The first half was really positive from us. We controlled the ball well, created opportunities and showed a lot of good signs against a very experienced side,” Vanis said.
“The disappointing part was that we couldn’t turn that dominance into goals, and then we were punished in transition in the second half. Those moments are part of the learning process for our young players, and we’ll continue to work on being more clinical and managing those situations better.”
The Young Reds will now turn their attention to their next fixture against Campbelltown City as they look to bounce back and continue their development throughout the season.
