Young Reds ready for the Lions

The Adelaide United Youth Team will face Sturt Lions in Round 10 of the NPL State League at the Adelaide Shores on Wednesday Night.

The Young Reds will compete in their third match in seven days and will look to record back to back wins after defeating Seaford Rangers 5-1 on Saturday afternoon.

The Adelaide United Youth Team currently sits third on the table with a game in hand over second spot Adelaide Olympic. A win on Wednesday Night will see the Young Reds leapfrog Adelaide Olympic into second spot on NPL State League table.

Winger Niko Apostolopoulos said although playing 3 games in a week maybe quite fatiguing, he believes it further improves the chemistry of the side especially for the squad members who have returned back from Spain 2 weeks ago.

“It’s fantastic for our side to have games under our belt especially for the boys who have just come back from Spain,” said Apostolopoulos.

“The matches have given us some team bonding so we can get on the same page as some of the boys have been away and some have remained here. So it’s been good to get back with the boys and get a feel for it again.

“We have been playing well in past three weeks in terms of keeping possession, but we haven’t been able to capitalise on opportunities which has cost us.”

With the Young Reds dominant in possession in nearly every match played, Apostolopoulos said the team has been working on forward runs to ensure that every opportunity created is taken.

“As players, we want to hold possession of the football so we can drag the opposition out as most sides play with a lot of numbers behind the ball,” said the 17 year old.

“So in the last couple of weeks our main goal has been to make more forward runs to try and drag the opposition back and allow our midfielders more room to attack the space created.

“Overall, we need to capitalise on our opportunities and take more shots at goal.

“Teams are going to be difficult to break down and it’s hard to do that over the whole 90 minutes, so taking more shots will benefit us and we have seen in past matches that we have the ability to shoot from range.

“So we take this game just as any other and hope we can take three points and hopefully it can give us the best chance to get into second spot on the ladder.”
