Adelaide United is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Tony Farrugia, a passionate and influential figure in South Australian football, who passed away peacefully on Tuesday night surrounded by his family after a long illness.
Farrugia played a pivotal role in the formation of Adelaide United Football Club in 2003, helping to guide the Club’s entry into the National Soccer League and laying the foundations for what would become one of the A-League’s most iconic teams. His vision, leadership and commitment during those formative days were instrumental in shaping the identity of Adelaide United as “The People’s Club.”

A former General Manager of the South Australian Soccer Federation and a Life Member of Football South Australia, Farrugia’s contribution to the game in our state extended far beyond his role in founding our Club. He was a driving force in reshaping local competitions, establishing the Final Series, and preserving the game’s rich history through key projects such as the Soccer Football in South Australia: A 100-Year History publication and the creation of the SASF Hall of Fame.
Farrugia was not only a contributor to the game’s development—he was a mentor, a community builder, and a deeply respected figure across all levels of the football landscape.
Inaugural Team Manager and long-time friend of the Club, Orazio Di Carlo, reflected:
“Tony was a great contributor to the sport of football in our state, but more than that, he was a gentleman and a family man, and perfectly represented what ‘The People’s Club’ is all about.” Di Carlo said.

“He had a rare ability to inspire and unite people. I witnessed him drive and convince influential figures such as Gordon Pickard, inaugural president Basil Scarsella, and Sam Ciccarello to get behind the Club. They basically had no hope of saying no—such was his energy and determination. In my view, that was what saved football in this state. It was exciting working with him,” Di Carlo concluded.
The entire Adelaide United family extends its deepest condolences to Tony’s loved ones. His legacy will forever be part of our Club’s story, and he will be remembered with immense respect and gratitude.
Adelaide United will wear black armbands in tonight’s Australia Cup Round of 32 match against Newcastle Jets as a mark of respect and tribute to Tony Farrugia.
Rest in peace, Tony, and thank you.
