Adelaide United Head Coach Theo Tsiounis acknowledged the challenge of a demanding schedule and a well-organised opponent after his side’s 3–1 defeat away to Wellington Phoenix brought an end to a strong unbeaten run. With a short turnaround ahead, the focus now quickly shifts to recovery and preparation for the next test.
Tsiounis on the end of the unbeaten run
“Of course it’s disappointing to see the run come to an end, but I thought we looked a little bit lethargic today. We tried to freshen things up by bringing some players in, but credit to Wellington Phoenix – they were very well organised and strong defensively. They made it difficult for us to penetrate, and in transition moments they took their chances, which is one of their real strengths.”
Tsiounis on the opening stages and key moments
“I actually thought we started the game quite well in the first 15 minutes and had a lot of the ball. But once again, if you lose focus or don’t respond well in key moments, you get punished. They capitalised on those moments and suddenly we found ourselves chasing the game.”
Tsiounis on responding under pressure
“Once we went behind, it was about trying to find a way back into the match. Credit to the group for sticking at it, because it’s been a massive few weeks for us with travel and back-to-back games. This is definitely a learning opportunity and something we’ll be better for on the other side.”
Tsiounis on second-half challenges
“Wellington dropped into a deep block pretty quickly, which they’ve shown all year they’re very good at. Once they do that, they’re hard to break down. We needed to move the ball quicker and be sharper when we won it back, but they were well organised and disciplined.”
Tsiounis on travel and conditions
“It’s always a difficult trip coming across the Tasman. The travel does take a toll, and combined with a loud home crowd it can make it tough. No excuses, but we didn’t quite have the zip to our game that we’ve shown over the past few weeks.”
Tsiounis on the response ahead
“The unbeaten run ending doesn’t change our approach. Before that run, we were already playing good football – the results just started to come at the end. Now it’s about recovering well, rotating where needed, and preparing properly for our next challenge against Melbourne FC.”
