Reds Head Coach Adrian Stenta addressed the media following Adelaide United’s hard-fought 1-0 victory over Central Coast Mariners at Coopers Stadium on Saturday night. The win moved the Reds closer to Finals qualification and extended their club-record unbeaten run to eleven matches. Stenta reflected on the resilience of his side, the importance of squad depth, and the growing belief within the team.
Stenta on the match and the team’s resilience…
“I thought we played some positive football in the first half, and there were moments where we could have broken the game open, but we just weren’t able to take our chances. The second half became more of a grind, and we had to withstand some pressure, but to guts it out, keep a clean sheet, and score with a moment of real quality—that’s sometimes what you need to win a game.
“We’re never going to be a team that sits back and protects a lead. That’s not how we want to play, but it’s important to have the ability to dig deep when needed. Given the tough, physical match we had in Wellington and the shorter recovery time, I think the players really showed their resilience tonight.”
Stenta on managing players and squad depth…
“Matilda and Erin weren’t 100% heading into the game—they felt a little something during the week but put their hands up to play. We knew we’d have to manage their minutes.
“If you look at who we took off—one of our key imports, one of our best central defenders, and another leader in Dylan Holmes—it shows the quality we have in the squad. The players coming off the bench stepped up, which is why we are in the position we are in.
“The attacking depth is a real strength. Fiona missed out, but we still had Chelsie and Erin combining for a great goal. We have players like Condon, and we’ve got multiple attacking threats. If you’re playing against us, it’s a nightmare to try and contain us.”
Stenta on the club’s record unbeaten run…
“It’s been a fantastic run, but we’re not focused on results—we’re focused on giving ourselves a chance in every game. Central Coast were desperate tonight, fighting for their spot in the six, and they probably deserved something from the game. That shows the kind of mentality and toughness we have in our squad.
“I love 2025—it’s been much better than 2024! But seriously, all season, we’ve spoken about putting ourselves in a position to take something from every game, and that’s what we’ll continue to do.”
Stenta on the fans and playing on International Women’s Day…
“Honestly, I think the fans helped get us over the line. It was 36 degrees earlier in the day, and to see so many people stay for both games, especially families with young kids, was incredible. I’m really thankful for the support, and I hope they keep coming out as we push for Finals.
“The club did a fantastic job celebrating International Women’s Day. It was great to see the inspirational women behind the players—those who have helped them get to where they are today—out on the pitch before and after the game. You can talk about supporting women’s football, or you can act on it, and this club is backing us by moving another game to Coopers Stadium. That kind of support makes a difference, and we really feel it.”
Stenta on the squad’s unity…
“I’m not big on big public displays, but I think it was fantastic to see the team celebrating on the pitch with their family and friends. Every person out there has played a role in getting these players to where they are today, so why not let them share that moment?
“It’s my toughest job every week—picking a starting XI and a matchday squad—because we have 25 players who all deserve a chance. But the players who aren’t playing are still turning up, training hard, and driving this team forward. That’s where our real strength lies.”
Stenta on facing Melbourne City next…
“I’ll enjoy this one first! It’s a long weekend, so I might put my feet up and worry about Melbourne City next week. But we’re looking forward to it. I don’t think we were at our best last time we played them, so we’ll go over there and have a crack. Anything is possible.”
