Craig Goodwin says Adelaide United are ready to turn a long pre-season of hard work into performance when the Reds begin their AFC Champions League Two campaign against Tai Po FC next Thursday night.
After an extended preparation period and some difficult results along the way, Goodwin believes the squad has used the time well to reset, refine and build towards competitive football.
“We’ve had a couple of games that didn’t go our way, so from that aspect, that was disappointing,” Goodwin said.
“But the length of the pre-season has given us a chance to regroup, work on things that we need to work on, and we’re really looking forward to next Thursday for a very big game.”
With the squad now settled, Goodwin has been encouraged by the standards being set on the training pitch.
“The intent, attitude and intensity at training has been very good,” he said.
“We can’t ask any more of the team and the effort we’re putting in, so hopefully all the hard work can be put into good practice come game time.”
Thursday’s clash will also present a different tactical challenge, with United preparing for a style of football that Goodwin expects to differ from what the Reds regularly experience in the A-League.
“The biggest thing we’ve spoken about is the different styles of football that we’ll play in Asia,” he said.
“Very different to the A-League. At times, the tempo can be very different, so it’s a challenge for us as a team and we look forward to it.”
For Goodwin, the match will also mark the beginning of his first Asian Champions League campaign with Adelaide United.
“It’s a great chance for this team and club,” he said.
“We’re excited to play against some good teams in Asia and hopefully do really well in the competition.”
